Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
